New Britain-Berlin Community Garden
ROOTS is a New Britain non-profit whose mission is to provide equitable food access to New Britain residents. Jefferson School, located on New Britain’s western boundary is adjacent to two public housing complexes. Residents of these complexes are more than a mile from local grocery stores that require either public transportation or a car to access. Locally, small shops or bodegas provide access to a supply of primarily processed foods. ROOTS through its community gardens on school grounds and via mobile food truck increases accessibility to fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The Club has given ROOTS a grant to cover the costs of constructing and maintaining the Jefferson School Community Garden.
On Rotary Day of Service, April 9, 10 AM-12 PM, Rotarians will join ROOTS staff and parents from the PTA to construct the gardens in preparation for the Spring planting season. The Community garden at Jefferson School will be planted with vegetables, herbs and flowers to be distributed to local residents.
Whether you’re in Rotary or not, we’d love to have your help for as much of the day as you can spare! Please sign up to volunteer, and we’ll be in touch.
